Following a novel study, I watched this with my class and the students were completely engaged. They were forgiving of the changes made to the story (recognizing that the change of medium from novel to film often involves changes in storytelling) and had only glowing praise for it. They cringed at all the right places and laughed in all the right spots. As for the (cynical adult) criticism of the effects, my students had no trouble suspending disbelief and getting taken in by the Creature Shop's superb work. All of this, and Anjelica Huston, too.
